Azerbaijanis in Germany

Most of the Azerbaijanis in Germany immigrated from eastern Turkey , Iran and Azerbaijan . A total of 120,000 to 140,000 Azerbaijanis live in Germany, of which only 4,000 are citizens of Azerbaijan.

Most of them are Shiites , and there are also Sunni Muslims among the German Azerbaijanis. Most speak Azerbaijani as their mother tongue, and to a lesser extent German .

history

The first settlers from Azerbaijan in Germany were Iranian Azerbaijanis ; other Azerbaijanis came from their place of birth in Turkey and began to settle in West Germany (in the Federal Republic of Germany) from the 1960s, bringing the number of Azerbaijani diaspora in Germany to over 190,000. A second wave of migrants of Azerbaijani origin came at the time of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict , when 10,000 Azerbaijanis immigrated to Germany mainly for economic reasons.

Many Azerbaijanis live in Berlin, which has an Azerbaijani population of 14,000 to 17,000. There are also considerable Azerbaijani groups living in Cologne , Bremen , Hamburg , Mainz , Frankfurt am Main , Munich , Düsseldorf and Stuttgart .

Depending on the estimate and self-assessment, between 15,219 (2006 census) and 140,000 Azerbaijanis live in Germany.
