history

The Asia Cup was launched in 1984 by the Asian Cricket Council and should initially take place every two years. The first edition was held in a group format and in addition to the eventual winner India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan also took part in the tournament. The second edition in Sri Lanka was won by the host after India did not participate in the tournament for sport-political reasons and was replaced by the winner of the South-East Asia Cup Bangladesh . The next two editions were won by India. However, political tensions between India and Pakistan dominated what happened, leaving Pakistan on a start in 1990canceled and the planned tournament in 1993 in Pakistan did not take place. 1995 was won again by India, 1997 by Sri Lanka, before 2000 Pakistan won its first tournament. From 2004 , Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates took part in the tournament for the first time, and thus six teams, which was won by Sri Lanka. The same format had the same winner in 2008 . In 2010 they returned to the old format with the four test teams from Asia and India won its fifth title. 2012 could be won by Pakistan. At the 2014 edition , with the increase in Afghanistan, five teams took part in the tournament won by Sri Lanka. The Asia Cup 2016 took place in Bangladesh and was supplemented for the first time by a team that was determined in a qualification . It was also the first tournament to be played in the Twenty20 format.
