Asiem El Difraoui

Abdelasiem (short: Asiem ) Hassan El Difraoui ( Arabic عبد العظيم حسن الدفراوي, DMG ʿAbd al-ʿAẓīm Ḥasan ad-Difrāwī ; born April 5, 1965 in Offenbach am Main ) is an Egyptian - German political scientist , economist , documentary film - and book author . He is particularly concerned with the Arab world and is considered a specialist in jihadist Internet propaganda.

Life

El Difraoui studied politics and economics at the American University of Cairo and the School of Oriental and African Studies in London and earned a bachelor's degree. In 1992 he obtained the research-oriented Diplôme d'études approfondies (DEA) in political science from the Institut d'études politiques de Paris (IEP / “Sciences Po”) . In 2010 he has in Gilles Kepel specialist International Relations with his thesis Al-Qaeda par l'image: La du prophétie martyre ( "The Jihad of the images - a political analysis of Al Qaeda's audiovisual propaganda") doctorate .

Asiem El Difraoui has worked as a journalist and documentary writer in Germany, the Arab world, the Balkans, Asia and above all in France. From 1992 to 2008 he created various political documentaries and reports with his production company Impossible Productions . From 2005 to 2010 Asiem El Difraoui was a lecturer at the IEP Paris and from 2010 to October 2012 research assistant in the research group for Near / Middle East and Africa at the Science and Politics Foundation in Berlin . There he worked on the research project “Jihadism on the Internet: The Internationalization of Discourses on Violence on the World Wide Web.” In this capacity, he advised the European Commission- funded “ Clean IT ” project to combat extremist Internet content. Since 2012 he has been a Senior Fellow at the Berlin Institute for Media and Communication Policy . His scientific expertise in the Arab world includes, in particular, Algeria , Egypt , Iraq and Saudi Arabia . El Difraoui has been co-editor of Zenith magazine since 2015 . He is also one of the founders of the Candid Foundation in Berlin, which, as an independent think tank, aims to establish a scientifically based work and dialogue with the Islamic world .
