Association of American University Presses
The Association of American University Presses ( AAUP , German: Association of American University Publishers ) is a non-profit organization of North American university publishers based in New York City .
history
The association was founded in 1937 after two dozen of its members had met regularly since 1920 to discuss problems.
In 1928, 13 university publishers compiled a catalog of 65 book titles and placed advertisements in The New York Times . From this initiative, the first American directory of educational materials developed, which set up a distribution among (university) schools and librarians.
The Cheney Report and a 1932 circular from Secretary Donald Bean called for joint activities to be intensified, particularly among university publishers with economic difficulties, including a. because of the Great Depression .
In 1936 Farrar & Rheinhardt announced their plan to set up a United University Publishing House, which was called University Books Inc. on the advice of the group . The group then named itself the Association of American University Presses and its first representatives were elected in February 1937. The first annual meeting took place in Chicago in 1946. The number of members grew and so a head office was founded in 1959, for the first time with full-time employees.
In 1964, the association founded the American University Press Services industry , which provided additional services for two decades.
In 2013 the association supported the establishment of an annual meeting, the International Convention of University Presses, at the Frankfurt Book Fair , at which the international Association of University Presses was also initiated in 2013 , an association that has members on all continents.
