The cruise ship Astor was built by HDW in Kiel and put into service in 1987.
history
The Astor was launched by Safmarine in 1987 as the successor to the ship of the same name that had been sold shortly before . The ship was in service from October 3, 1988 to November 30, 1995 under the name Fedor Dostoevskiy . From 1996 to November 2009, drove Astor in the Charter for Transocean Tours .
In the winter of 2009/2010 the Astor was rebuilt at the Lloyd shipyard in Bremerhaven. After the insolvency of the long-term charterer Transocean Tours , she started on June 1, 2010 for the Transocean Kreuzfahrten GmbH & Co KG, which was newly established by Premicon AG . Before that, the ship was owned by Premicon AG .
After the British company Cruise & Maritime Voyages (CMV) had already chartered the ship for three winter seasons at the end of 2013, it was announced at the beginning of 2014 that CMV Transocean will be integrated into its own company as a German brand. With this, CMV also took over the Astor summer charter from the 2014 season .
In October 2014 it turned out that the operating company was unable to pay the outstanding claims of the crew , two bunker suppliers and the shipyard on its own. The International Transport Workers' Federation and also one of the bunker suppliers wanted to chain the ship because of the outstanding claims. Financial support came from the Piraeus Global Group, which is also the parent company of CMV. The advances should be offset against the charter rates in winter. On November 7, 2014, the operating company of the ship filed for bankruptcy.
On December 15, 2014, the previous charterer, the Global Maritime Group , the parent company of CMV, bought Astor from the insolvent operating company Premicon Hochseekreuzfahrt GmbH & Co. KG MS “Astor” ( Premicon AG ). The ship is scheduled to leave the German market in 2021 and will be used by CMV as Jules Verne on the French market in the future.
After the bankruptcy of the British parent company on July 20, 2020, the further use of the Astor launched in Tilbury is unclear.
Trivia
The Astor is often mistaken for another ship. Under the then name Astor , today's saga Pearl II was used in the television series " The Dream Ship " from 1983 to 1984 . The main reason for the frequent mix-up is that Safmarine had an almost identical ship built as a successor to the first Astor ( Saga Pearl II ) and retained the established name when the new ship was commissioned. The older ship built by HDW in Hamburg looks very similar to today's Astor , but is 12 meters shorter, and most of the lifeboats are open.
