Asyl in Not - support committee for politically persecuted foreigners are based in Vienna is an Austrian club , which for the rights of refugees begins. It is a non-profit , non-partisan NGO in the field of refugee aid. Michael Genner has been chairman since 2004 .

Foundation and goals

The organization was founded in 1985 as a "support committee for politically persecuted foreigners" by Austrians and Iranian refugees and initially looked after refugees from Iran . Later it turned into a counseling center for refugees from all countries of origin. In 1993 it was divided into three organizations in order to guarantee a comprehensive care structure from the reception to the social integration of refugees. One of the co-founders is Willi Resetarits , who also played a key role in founding SOS Mitmensch and Integrationshaus Wien . Asyl in Not is a member of the Asylkoordination Österreich. According to its own presentation, the mission statement of the association is:

  • We uphold the right to asylum.
  • We are against a fortress Europe .
  • We fight for freedom and democracy .

The association sees itself as a political movement. The specific work relates to legal advice in the asylum procedure as well as advice on labor and social law. Legal advice - if required also in English, French, Russian, Chechen, Arabic - and support are free of charge. Furthermore, Asyl in Not wants to raise awareness of the need for help and need of the refugees.

The office is located in Vienna's WUK on Währinger Strasse . The organization is networked with other NGOs, including Ute Bock's refugee project , the Integrationshaus Wien and the platform Jetzt Jetzt! . It organizes demonstrations, issues press releases and participates in a number of civil society initiatives . Despite their combative stance, asylum in need has also been recognized by the authorities over time and is involved, for example, in the appointment of the Human Rights Advisory Council. The work of Asyl in Not is regularly reported in the media. In October 2014, the NEWS magazine compared the positions of the Ministry of the Interior and Asylum in Need in the article “The most important questions on the current refugee debate” . In May 2010, the ORF broadcast a TV spot for the project several times, which was designed by director Roland Zumbühl . There is also increasing international networking, for example with the Dublin Transnational Project .

The main focus of the association's activities is in Eastern Austria, where Austria's largest reception center, the Federal Care Center East in Traiskirchen, is also located. However, there is also close cooperation with Tyrolean refugee initiatives, such as the platform right to stay and earlier with ARGE Deportation Detention Innsbruck , whose contract with the Federal Ministry of the Interior was not extended in 2005.

Asyl in Not has the following balance sheet for 2014 : “90 people received asylum, 36 people received subsidiary protection, 15 return decisions were permanently declared inadmissible, so that those affected were given residence permits. Thanks to our legal assistance, 141 people received protection and right of residence in Austria. ”Asyl um Not only takes care of political refugees, but also of people who are discriminated against and persecuted for various reasons in their home country, such as transgender people.

Campaigns

In 2015, Asyl in Not started the Refugees Welcome! and has been part of the platform for human asylum policy since it was founded on August 28, 2015 . On July 19, 2015 organized by the Association demonstration at the Viennese called Minoritenplatz the immediate resignation of the Austrian Interior Minister Johanna Mikl-Leitner (ÖVP) because of refoulement so severely traumatized refugees, which - according to ORF - meant that the crew of the airline Austrian the Refused transport. The association is financed from membership fees and donations. Since 1996, Asyl in Not has held art auctions for political refugees under the title “Art Asylum ”. Artists such as Alfred Hrdlicka , Hermann Nitsch , Ulrich Seidl , Thomas Draschan , Gunter Damisch , Ona B. , Paul Flora , Adolf Frohner , Arnulf Rainer and others donated works.
