Lifesaver is a broadcast of the MDR . It was first broadcast on January 16, 2014. The program recounts accidents and rescue missions that actually occurred (in Central Germany and in the former GDR ), among others. a. the Elsterwerda railway accident in 1997 and the accident involving the inland waterway vessel “Heimatland” in 1951 in the GDR.

The model for Lebensretter is the program " Notruf " , hosted by Hans Meiser from 1992 to 2006 on RTL . For the production of lifesavers is Saxonia Entertainment responsible. The program was initially moderated by Marco Schreyl ; in January 2015 he was replaced by Sven Voss .
Original and archive recordings are used for the film scenes and filming is carried out at the original locations.
