The mountaineer Andreas Marthaler ( Martin Gruber ) is about to open a climbing school in the United States in the Grand Canyon with his girlfriend Sarah Kraus ( Stephanie Stumph ) . Before that, however, he and Sarah have been invited to the wedding of his best friend Stefan Hofer ( Stefan Murr ), the head of the mountain rescue service in Ramsau am Dachstein . On the morning after the wedding celebration, the two friends go on a farewell mountain tour together, during which Stefan had a fatal accident when he wanted to help a hiker in need. Before he dies, he asks Andreas to look after his wife Emilie ( Stefanie von Poser ) and their two children. The fact that the family blames him for Stefan's death, because the new husband would not have climbed the mountain that day without him, makes the situation all the more difficult for Andreas. Eight-year-old Lukas Hofer (Dustin Raschdorf), for whom the death of his father is also a shock, goes together with the family dog in search of his father, as he is absolutely convinced that he called for him and himself is still in the mountains where he waits for him. On the way, Lukas wedges his foot between two boulders and is stuck in the dark. When Andreas Marthaler learns that the boy has disappeared, he immediately goes to look and can deliver Lukas unharmed to his relieved mother. (other guest stars: Lisa Kreuzer as Aunt Maria, Stefanie Robotka as Hanna Hofer)
Not only the family, but also the men of the mountain rescue, mourn Stefan. When a cross was put up in memory of Stefan's at the scene of the accident, Andreas spotted an unconscious woman to whom he abseiled. She has amnesia and cannot give any details about her name, nor does she know how she got to the mountains. Research reveals that she was seen with a little girl at the valley station of the cable car the day before. A search for the child is initially unsuccessful. Frank Wörler (Martin Luding), the girl's father, appears surprisingly. There are disputes about custody between him and his ex-wife Sabine ( Floriane Daniel ), the mother of the child. With the helicopter , in which the parents of little Isabella (Miriam Weiskopf) are, you can see the child at a white waterfall. Unsettled by her father's intransigence, Isabella loses her footing and falls. She manages to cling to a transverse tree until Andreas reaches her and brings her safely back upstairs. There he persuades the father of the child to strive for a solution with his wife that serves the good of Isabella. Sarah is now sitting on packed boxes in Munich and refuses Andreas' calls.
Thomas Wiedenhain ( Steffen Wink ) and Karsten Meinert ( Markus Böker ) have stayed at Pension Marthaler. They are a couple, but out of consideration for Karsten's wife Gaby ( Anja Schüte ) and his children, nobody should know. When Thomas confronts his friend with a decision and he leaves him there, Thomas goes alone into the mountains, where he slips on a whirlpool and wedges his foot between two stones so that he cannot get free on his own. In the room he left a letter To the love of my life . Since a storm has come down in the meantime, the mountain rescue service goes in search of him and Andreas manages to save him from drowning at the last moment. Karsten rushes to the friend and finally tackles the inevitable conversation with his wife. Emelie is very worried about a loan that her late husband Stefan raised to 335,000 euros without her knowing anything about it. Since she cannot raise the repayment installments, there is a foreclosure auction in the room. Andreas tries to find a way out with the help of the bank employee Scharnhoff ( Alexa Wiegandt ), whom he assisted in an accident in the mountains. Sarah, who is now in the village, tries to negotiate a deal with the mayor and major hotelier Peter Herbrechter, who is interested in the Hofer property, because she hopes to be able to “buy out” Andreas.
Mayor and hotelier Peter Herbrechter receives a visit from his old friend Manfred Rostetter ( Michael Greiling ). Both have a friendship that is not without problems, as they used to always want to outdo each other. Rostetter has come with his son Georg ( Leopold Hornung ) and proudly tells Herbrecht that his son is studying international law in the USA . Some time later, Rostetter let his friend know that he was terminally ill with Alzheimer's and went to places in his past to collect memories. Shortly before Rostetter sets off on a mountain tour with his son and Herbrechter's son Tobias ( Markus Brandl ), who is with the mountain rescue service, the next day , the friend asks him what his son is actually doing, because he has neither stamp nor visa in his Having a passport, he could hardly study in the USA. Obviously Manfred Rostetter didn't know that his son was lying to him. The trio set off for the mountains. Shortly before Manfred Rostetter and Tobias Herbrechter also reach the top of the mountain, there is a violent dispute between father and son Rostetter and, due to Georg's negligence, his father, Tobias, who is connected to him by rope, also falls into the Deep tears. The men are only held by the rope secured with staples in the rock. These threaten to loosen. Georg, who wants to get help, has severe breathing problems on the way due to a previous illness and collapses. A girl (Dora Pickl) makes her grandfather (Kurt Habicher) aware of the men, who then alerts the mountain rescue service. At the last moment, so to speak, the victims of the accident can be rescued. In the meantime Johanna (Maria Hartmann) has taken up residence in the Marthaler guesthouse. She is not only an old friend of Maria Marthaler, but also the divorced wife of Manfred Rostetter. A discussion ensues between the former couple and also between father and son. Emilie Hofer rejects Herbrechter's offer to buy her farm for 335,000 euros, despite massive financial problems. A sale would also mean the end for Pension Marthaler. Andreas, who now knows about Sarah's brawls with the mayor, blames his girlfriend in disappointment. Sarah gets into her sports car with tears in her eyes. Andreas tries to reach her on his cell phone, distracted by this, the young woman suddenly sees a truck speeding towards her in her lane. Andreas hears a crack on his cell phone. |
title
The title initially used by ZDF, Die Bergwacht , met with strong criticism from the Austrian Mountain Rescue Service . Among other things, it was suggested that the name "Bergwacht" was only in use in Austria until 1945. It was also criticized that the real logo was used despite the wrong name. After the ZDF refused to rename it, initially with reference to German viewers who were not familiar with mountain rescuers, the broadcaster finally gave in.
