In the studio ( Japanese アトリエシリーズ ; Atorieshirīzu) is a series of computer games . The first title Atelier Marie: The Alchemist of Salburg debuted on the PlayStation in 1997 and therefore the series is mainly produced for the PlayStation generations. Nevertheless, the international marketing outside of Japan only began with the title Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana , which was released for the PlayStation 2 , in 2005 for North America and later in Europe in 2006.
The video game series is based on its own title Atelier ; Here the player has a workshop in which he carries out pseudosciences of alchemy and has to find and collect materials for this.
Also Manga -Adaptionen and Anime -TV series have been published.
Game elements
Alchemy is the characteristic feature of the Atelier series. The player controls the character and wanders through the game world to find materials for alchemy. Depending on the recipe, you can make new objects; these objects can be cooking ingredients, remedies, tools, weapons, armor and accessories. Many materials have properties that can be formed into an object with other materials in alchemy - here the end product can take on some of the properties and this can be fused with other materials or finished objects to form new, more qualitative objects. However, you can only create objects with recipes because you have to have the knowledge.
The combat system is turn-based and the manufactured objects can also be used, for example bombs that add damage to opponents or food (including medicines) that can heal or improve the status of the characters.
Game stories from the Atelier series are mostly lovely and humorous in different chapters. There are usually no opponents, but conflicts in the respective region, with the player continuing the journey with a huge group of allied characters late in the game - this usually occurs in the last or penultimate chapter. Many of the games in the series have a limited game frame, so you lose days on the trip to other places and the deadline for assignments is getting closer. However , this time pressure has been lifted since Atelier Shallie: Alchemists of the Dusk Sea . The games usually have a good or bad ending; Failures on the main missions can lead to a bad ending.
The Atelier games usually appear without localization in German.
controversy
Mostly outside of Japan, people are repeatedly debating in Internet forums about the sexualized portrayal of young girls in the studio series. Issues like pedophilia or sexism are addressed and mostly thrown back by fans of the series; While it is widely discussed in Internet forums, there has not yet been any media attention.
Video games
So far there are 18 main games in the regular Atelier series, which have been divided into seven separate series. Three games in the Salburg series, two games in the Gramnad series, three games in the Iris series, two games in the Mana Khemia series, three games in the Arland series, three games in the Dusk series and two games in the Mysterious series.
As an addition to the main series, seven offshoots were published.
Some games were re-released as ports or extended versions mostly for mobile devices or handheld consoles .

- The characters Marie from Atelier Marie: The Alchemist of Salburg , Liliane Vehlendorf, Rozeluxe Meitzen, Whim and Rewrich Wallach from Mana Khemia 2 appear in the role-playing game Cross Edge , which was released in 2008.
- Viorate from Atelier Viorate: The Alchemist of Gramnad 2 has an appearance in the role-playing game Trinity Universe , released in 2009.

- With the October 2015 update to Chain Chronicle , Rorolina Frixell and Cordelia von Feuerbach from Atelier Rorona , Merurulince Rede Arls, Keina Swaya and Sterkenburg Cranach from Atelier Meruru , Totooria Helmold and Mimi Houllier from Schwarzlang from Atelier Totori were added as playable characters.
Anime and Manga adaptations
Atelier Marie and Elie - The Alchemist of Salburg ( マ リ ー と エ リ ー の ア ト リ エ ザ ー ル ブ ル グ の 錬 金 術士 ) is a manga adaptation divided into five volumes, by Yoshihiko Ochi and published for the first time in Japan via Enterbrain . Later also published in Germany by the Egmont Foundation , in France by Ki-oon and four English editions by Tokyopop . On July 25, 2007, the series was republished on two Tankōbon volumes. Later the manga got a sequel called Marie to Elie Atelier: Salburg no Renkinjutsushi Second Season ( マ リ ー と エ リ ー の ア ト リ エ ザ ー ル ブ ル ル グ の 錬 金 術士 Second Season) - since the most recent version of September 2015 there are already seven Tankōbon volumes. In 2005, Enterbrain also published a one shot manga entitled Viorate no Atelier: Kiteretsu Muraokoshi ( ヴ ィ オ ラ ー ト の ア ト リ エ き て れ つ 村 お こ し ).
Atelier Escha & Logy: Alchemists of the Dusk Sky was adapted as a manga series by Chako Abeno. There have been changes to the original game in this series, as the supporting characters play a bigger role here. Two volumes of Tankōbon have been published since January 2015. Eventually, this manga series was also turned into a twelve-episode anime TV series produced by Studio Gokumi , directed by Yoshiaki Iwasaki. This anime was aired on Tokyo MX from April 10, 2014 to June 26, 2014.

With the release of "Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout" (2019), the series was able to experience the sales debut week in Japan with the most significant sales. 150,000 units (physical and digital) are said to have been sold in the first week of sales. The game was thus sold out at many retailers in Japan. While “Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book” sold 370,000 times and was considered the best-selling game in the series, “Atelier Ryza” was able to beat this record with 420,000 units that were put into circulation and has been since then best-selling game in the series.
