Atlético Petróleos do Huambo , mostly just Petro Huambo , is a football club from the Angolan city of Huambo . The club also has sections in other sports, including handball in particular , but also basketball , chess , martial arts , and roller hockey .

The association's president is the former Angolan manager and diplomat, José Patrício .

The club welcomes its guests in its Estádio do Ferroviário, which originally has seats for 20,000 people, and occasionally also in the 8,000-seat Estádio dos Kurikutelas , which is also home to the CR Caála .

history

The club was created on January 5, 1980 through the merger of the young Sonangol work club Desportivo Sonangol with the Atlético de Nova Lisboa, founded in 1955 . Huambo carried the Portuguese place name Nova Lisboa until Angola's independence from Portugal in 1975 .

Petro Huambo played in the top division of Angola, the Girabola , since 1984 . As the best placement, the club achieved third place several times, most recently in the 2003 season . In 2005, however, the main sponsor Sonangol withdrew. As a result, the club slipped financially and increasingly also athletically. The 2008 season finally ended the club penultimate and thus rose from the Girabola in the second division, the Gira Angola . There, Petro Huambo met local rivals Benfica Huambo in Série B of the two-pronged Gira Angola . This meant a new edition of the traditional Huambos local derby , which was particularly explosive among football fans in the city in the 1980s.

In the ascent to the Girabola, the Segundona , Petro Huambo missed the ascent in his Série B in 2014 . Despite high expectations, the club was only third in the end, instead the competitor AC Lobito managed to rise.

successes

Participation in the first official Angolan cup competition in 1982 can be regarded as the greatest national success . There, the Petro Huambo was only defeated in the final to Primeiro de Maio with 0: 2.

The greatest international success was the club's participation in the CAF Confederation Cup 2004, where they were eliminated in the first round against the Liberty Professionals from Ghana .
