Attala of Strasbourg

Attala von Strasbourg (* around 690 in Alsace ; † December 3, 741 in Strasbourg ) was abbess of St. Stephen's monastery in Strasbourg and is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church .

Life

Attala was the daughter of the Etichonen Duke Adalbert († 722) and his wife Gerlind . She was raised by her aunt Odilia in their monastery on what is now Mount Odile near Strasbourg. Around 720, at the age of 30, she took over the management of the St. Stephen's Convent in Strasbourg, which her father had founded, and which she held until her death in 741. After her death, she was buried in St. Stephan and was venerated as a saint from the 10th century ; however, their relics disappeared in the French Revolution .

Her feast day was December 3rd until 1865, today it is December 5th. Attala is often depicted with a crown as well as a key or church.

  • According to the Elenchus of the Bollandists , she was a virgin in Strasbourg, and according to the work Attributes of the Saints , her body was cut off by a messenger for use in healing, which, however, ended up getting back to the mutilated corpse by getting lost.
  • As the origin of the name, among other things, from the Gothic / Old High German “fatherly”, from the Greek ἀταλός ( atalos , “childlike, youthful”) or from the old German “nobility, noble” and as a name meaning from the Gothic “representing the father's position”.
