In the first half of the 19th century the community always had around 400 inhabitants; As a result of the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture , the number of inhabitants then fell continuously to the current lows.

economy

For centuries the people of Aubeville lived on agriculture; The soils of the former municipality belong to the Fins Bois of the Cognac wine-growing region , but sales of expensive brandies have tended to decline in recent decades, so that viticulture no longer plays an important role today. Tourism in the form of rental of holiday homes has contributed to the municipality's income since the 1960s.

history

The presence of a Romanesque church suggests the existence of a village in medieval times.

Attractions

The largely unadorned Romanesque parish church ( Église Saint-Cybard ) is a building from the 12th century, the eastern parts of which, however, were built in the 15th and 16th centuries. Century were revised in the styles of the late Gothic . The west facade with its three-quarter high buttresses was renewed in the 19th century. The quarry stone masonry of the outer walls, which were not reinforced by buttresses, could not support a vault and so the nave is spanned by an open roof structure to this day . The transept and apse area were - clearly recognizable - revised at a later time. The second entrance on the south side of the church, as well as the presence of a transept, point to the fact that it was a simple former priory church of the Abbey of Saint-Cybard in Angoulême .
