action

At the time of Prohibition , the petty crook Sonny dreams of being a feared and rich gang boss. His dream seems to come true when the gangster Tiger has to flee New Orleans . Sonny tells Tiger that he helped him escape. For this he gets control of Mulberry Street in New York.

Once there, he and the local crook Barrabas set out to extort protection money from business people. However, they refuse to pay because they would already pay a certain Rocky protection money. The Irish priest, with whom he is fighting a boxing match, comes up against him in particular. Besides that, at least one other syndicate is apparently trying to spread on Mulberry Street. A little boy named Duke, on the other hand, proves to be a valuable informant for Sonny in business and love affairs - Sonny has fallen in love with a young woman named Virginia. He pretends to be an employee of a special police department. However, he initially had little success in the search for the unknown Rocky.

When the latter finally threatens him and his partner Barrabas makes off, Sonny also leaves the neighborhood for the appearance. However, he would like to investigate further undisturbed. Sonny finds out that the pastor runs a secret distillery. As Duke, whose right hand man calls the pastor Rocky, Sonny has identified his opponent. This is how the pastor finances, as he explains to Sonny, his orphanage. It also turns out that Virginia is Rocky's sister. She introduces him to Sonny as a policeman. This then declares that he does not want to take action against Rocky's criminal activities. He also wanted to change jobs after the investigation was over.

After all, Tiger wants Mulberry Street back. He and his gang are beaten up by Sonny and Rocky and then handed over to the police. Rocky agrees to Sonny as a brother-in-law, but has - since Sonny and Virginia had already kissed - a particularly long engagement period.
