The Angels Eat Beans is a gangster film parody from 1973 with Bud Spencer and Giuliano Gemma in the leading roles. The film was also released under the title The Fat in America .
action
The clever daydreamer Sonny and the strong catcher Charlie meet at the end of the 1920s. Both are short of money and even have to queue for a bowl of soup with the Salvation Army . When they beat up a couple of police officers, they are watched by thugs of the mafia godfather Don Angelo.
After meeting in the Smoky Joe’s bar , they are invited for an interview. The mafia godfather Don Angelo takes a liking to the unequal couple and hires them as debt collectors. But the two have absolutely no success. The first debtor is dead, the second debtor is about to commit suicide, and the third debtor is so broke that the family baby can only suck a peach stone because there is no food in the house. After helping all the debtors instead of cashing in, they want to rob a bank. But it is precisely this bank that is unlucky and bankrupt .
Instead, they rob a rival syndicate to make money. But this instigates a bitter underworld war, and the police are also looking for them, as they consider the duo to be professional killers. The showdown takes place in a warehouse in the harbor. After a beating orgy, the mafiosi are arrested by the police and Charlie returns as a catcher in the ring.
background
Originally, this film should be a Spencer - Hill be film, but Terence Hill was busy at this time with other projects, and we committed Giuliano Gemma.
The film premiered in Italy on March 22, 1973 and was released in German cinemas on May 25. The film was very successful in Italy and established Bud Spencer as the leading actor even without his partner Terence Hill.
In 1974, the sequel The Angels Like It Hot appeared with Ricky Bruch (instead of Bud Spencer) and Giuliano Gemma in the lead roles.
The theme song is called Angels and Beans , sung by Kathy & Gulliver in the opening and closing credits.
Trivia
An informant named Judas always appears in the film, who works for both the Mafia and the police. When Inspector Mackintosh wants to give Judas $ 30 in 3 ten-dollar bills for his services, Judas asks the inspector to give him 30 individual dollar coins, as this is an old tradition in the family. This is a direct allusion to the 30 pieces of silver of Judas Iscariot .
