occupation

Hector, the knight in shining armor (also Hector, knights in shining armor ) is an Italian - French adventure - comedy of Pasquale Festa Campanile from the year 1976 . It is tailored to the main actor Bud Spencer , who plays the Italian folk hero Ettore Fieramosca (Hector Fieramosca).

action

Apulia in 1504: A war rages between Spain and France on Italian soil. The French lay siege to the Barletta fortress held by the Spanish . While the trapped Spaniards suffer from hunger in the city, the French demonstratively hold a princely feast in front of the city wall.

The condottiere Hector Fieramosca, an Italian mercenary leader , and his comrades join the Spaniards, for whom the war seems to have been lost. With Hector's presence the cards are reshuffled. Provoked by the French round table, Hector grabs one of the few edible animals left in the fortress - a suckling pig (which the city chief had hidden from the population) - rides in front of the city gates and tosses it to the French on the table.

In further trades, a mercenary from Fieramosca defected to the French, but was executed by them. Hector then captures the three French knights who are responsible for the execution. Thereupon he and his Italian comrades are deeply offended by them. This calls for retaliation: To resolve the conflict, a horse show is scheduled in which 13 French people are supposed to compete against 13 Italians.

So Hector has three days to put together and train a powerful troop. But since nobody wants to compete against the French, Hector has to persuade old acquaintances or force them to join the fight: thieves, cheaters, a drunkard, a minstrel and a monk. All are knighted .

There is a fight on a beach. The confident French seem to win at first, but with many tricks and Hector's clout, who defeats several knights almost single-handedly, the Italians are successful. The disgraced French leave, the honor of the Spaniards is restored thanks to their Italian comrades in arms.

background

In terms of content, the film is based on the novel Ettore Fieramosca (1833, The Challenge of Barletta ) by the Italian writer Massimo d'Azeglio . This in turn has an incident during the Italian Wars on the subject, the so-called Disfida di Barletta (1503).

The equestrian duel on the beach is a parody of the battle scenes from Anthony Mann's El Cid (1961, with Charlton Heston and Sophia Loren).

The $ 10 million film budget was exceptionally high for a Bud Spencer film. War and siege engines were built in their original size based on contemporary models by Leonardo da Vinci . The late medieval architecture of Barletta was reconstructed for the backdrops. 300 workers, bricklayers, locksmiths and joiners stamped a replica of the fortress out of the ground in 38 days, for which 4,500 tons of material were used. To accommodate the actors, extras and props, a second small “town” was built around the film city. Pier Luigi Pizzi, one of the most renowned Italian stage and costume designers, took on the equipment .
