August Bassermann

August Bassermann (born December 4, 1847 in Mannheim , † February 28, 1931 in Karlsruhe ) was a German theater actor , theater director and general manager .

Life

August Bassermann came from the Mannheim merchant family Bassermann . His parents were the tobacco wholesaler Ludwig Alexander Bassermann and his wife Elise geb. Reinhardt. Even as a high school student, he wanted to be a stage actor. However, he only followed his parents' wishes and studied law at the universities of Heidelberg and Berlin . After completing his doctorate in Heidelberg, he worked as a trainee lawyer.

After participating in the Franco-Prussian War in 1870/71 (including the battle of Wörth and the siege of Strasbourg ), he retired from military service as a reserve lieutenant.

He then took lessons from Heinrich Oberländer and in 1873 received an engagement at the Dresden Court Theater . From there he came to the Stadttheater Vienna in 1876 as a replacement for the actor Maximilian von Hoxar . Here he found support in Heinrich Laube and Maurice Strakosch and worked there until May 1880.

After a short stay at the Theater an der Wien , Bassermann went to New York . After returning to Europe, he was engaged in Berlin and at the Stuttgart court theater . On September 1, 1886, he joined the Mannheim Court Theater Association , where he also worked as a director . In 1895 he was appointed director of this stage.

From 1904 he was the general manager of the Grand Ducal Court Theater in Karlsruhe. When he resigned his directorship at the end of the 1919 season, Stanislaus Fuchs was his successor.

Bassermann was married to the court actress Sofie Burska (or Benas) since 1900. The actor Albert Bassermann was his nephew.

Bassermann was a Knight of the Order of the Zähringer Löwen, 1st class.
