August Christian Borheck (born January 10, 1751 in Osterode , † June 1, 1815 in Eschweiler ) was a German philologist , historian and university professor .

Live and act

Borheck studied philosophy and theology at the Georg August University in Göttingen . He was then rector in Zellerfeld , teacher of Latin and Greek at the pedagogy in Bergen monastery and from 1778 to 1780 rector of the Stadtlyceum (grammar school) in Salzwedel . During this time he was elected a foreign member of the Royal German Society of Göttingen . From the beginning of 1780 he was rector of the high school in Bielefeld . In Marburg he received his doctorate in philosophy in 1787. On May 31, 1790 he became a full professor of history and eloquence at the University of Duisburg . There he caused massive offense because of his scandalous way of life: He was so deeply in debt that his salary was temporarily paid directly to his creditors, fell out with his fellow professors and was shunned by the students, so that from 1794 he stopped giving lectures at all. Eventually he was even accused of incest with his daughter. In 1801 the rector and senate of the university applied to the state government for his removal from office. On July 31, 1801, the Klevian state government asked him to leave Duisburg, because he had "caused a great nuisance through his entire life there, especially through the last incidents with his daughter". In the end, there was no formal impeachment proceedings because the most serious allegations against Borheck could not be proven, but on November 27, 1801 he was dismissed as a professor. Then he lived as a private scholar in Cologne . He wrote numerous writings, of which regional historical works and translations by ancient authors are particularly important. Several attempts to establish educational and regional history journals were unsuccessful.
