August Haake (actor)
August Haake (born May 5, 1793 in Koenigsberg in the Neumark ; † April 18, 1864 in Darmstadt ) was a German theater actor and director .
Life
Haake grew up as the son of a tailor with an uncle . He enjoyed a thorough education in high school , but was fascinated by the theater early on. August Wilhelm Iffland described him as a talent for the stage, but recommended that he wait with a career in theater. Therefore, Haake first went into the civil service as a copyist in his hometown. In 1811 he finally received a recommendation to Stettin from Iffland and began his acting career there. As a result, he had to make ends meet as a member of touring theaters and sometimes suffered great hardship. Finally he gained a foothold at the Karlsruhe court theater and was able to marry the actress Auguste Neustädt (1788–1880). After further intermediate stops, his career finally turned out to be more successful: in 1818 he worked under August Klingemann in Braunschweig , where until 1823 he mainly took on the roles of lovers and heroes and also directed . After further engagements he was director of the stages in Mainz and Wiesbaden from 1829, and of the Breslau theater in 1835 . Haake came to Oldenburg via Braunschweig and Hamburg , where he was engaged as a director and actor by Ludwig Starklof in 1841 . A critic characterized him in 1841 as a thinking artist . After just four years he gave up his position in Oldenburg for health reasons. Later he worked as a director and actor in Frankfurt am Main and - after a position as theater director in Heidelberg (1854) - also worked in Meiningen and Nuremberg .
