August Matthes (theologian)

Carl Christian August Matthes (born November 9, 1858 in Neu Langsow , Brandenburg ; † February 8, 1945 in Erfurt , Thuringia ) was an Evangelical Lutheran theologian in Brandenburg, Thuringia and Pomerania.

Life

He was the son of pastor August Matthes and Luise Heinze. Matthes attended grammar school in Frankfurt (Oder) and studied Protestant theology in Tübingen , Leipzig , Erlangen and Berlin . During his studies he joined the Berlin and Erlangen Wingolf . In 1882 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD. After ordination in 1884, Matthes became a pastor in Warnitz in the Uckermark region . In 1890 he became pastor and senior teacher at the Roßleben monastery school in Thuringia.

In 1895 August Matthes was appointed superintendent and pastor in Kolberg in Pomerania. In 1931 he retired and died in Erfurt in 1945.

Matthes was a denominational Lutheran within the Prussian Union and chairman of the Lutheran Conference for Pomerania .
