August Sandtel (born August 26, 1911 in Venhaus , Emsland ; † June 14, 1992 in Bremen ) was a German Roman Catholic clergyman and provost in Bremen from 1961 to 1981 .

Life

August Sandtel studied after graduating from high school in Rheine at the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg theology . On 18 December 1937 he received by the Bishop of Osnabrück Hermann Wilhelm Berning in the Cathedral of St. Peter the priesthood . He was a chaplain in the community of St. Johann in Osnabrück and worked as a religion teacher at local schools.

In 1961 he was appointed by Helmut Hermann Wittler , Bishop of Osnabrück, as successor to Heinrich Ohrmann , as provost of St. Johann and pastor primarius of the Catholic parish of Bremen and dean of the Bremen deanery, and later also as cathedral chapter in Osnabrück. Driven by the Second Vatican Council and the Würzburg Synod , he was active in politics and society. He was particularly committed to the ecumenical movement in Bremen. He built up the educational institution of the Catholics in the state of Bremen . He was the initiator for the new construction and renovation of the churches of St. Peter and Paul (1963), St. Benedict (1966), St. Franziskus (1966), St. Pius (1966), St. Ursula (1967), St. Brigitta (1972), St. Hildegard (1972), St. Barbara (1976).

In 1971 Provost Sandtel had the Provost Church of St. John rebuilt according to the new liturgical guidelines of the 2nd Vatican Council. He replaced the neo-Gothic altar with a modern one, which made it possible to celebrate Mass versus populum, had the two side altars removed and replaced with a tabernacle stele like a Pieta purchased in the art trade. To the south of the provost church, the provost's office and vicariate were built. In 1975 the parish hall was built on Kolpingstrasse. In 1982 he had a bronze plaque attached to the Kolping House, commemorating the synagogue that the Nazis deliberately burned down there during the so-called "Reichskristallnacht".

Under Sandtel, an Osnabrück bishop visited the Protestant house of the church for the first time. And when at the beginning of the seventies the Corpus Christi procession was hindered twice by rain or even canceled, he asked the building owner at the cathedral, Hans-Henry Lamotte, whether the procession could not take place in the cathedral when it rained again. She was allowed. Since then, Catholics have always moved to the cathedral on Corpus Christi in bad weather. Otherwise, the ecumenical movement under Sandtel made progress in Bremen.

In 1971 he was appointed Knight of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem by Cardinal Grand Master Eugène Cardinal Tisserant and invested in the Konstanz Minster on May 15, 1971 by Lorenz Cardinal Jaeger , Grand Prior of the German Lieutenancy . He was an officer of the order. He was involved in numerous social projects in the Holy Land .
