August Schäfer (judge)

August Schäfer (born July 23, 1888 in Schweinfurt , † March 28, 1984 in Munich ) was a German judge .

Life

The son of a Catholic bailiff attended high school in Erlangen . After graduating from high school, he enrolled on October 31, 1907 at the Friedrich-Alexander University of Law. As early as August 26, 1907, he was active in the Corps Baruthia . In 1911 he passed the first state examination ("passed"). In the First World War he last took part in the rank of lieutenant in the reserve. In the second state examination in 1919 he achieved a "very good". From November 1919 to 1925 he was III. or II. Public Prosecutor at the Memmingen Regional Court . Then he was a magistrate in Erlangen until 1927. In 1927 he was appointed first public prosecutor at the Munich I district court . In 1931, Schäfer became a district judge there. In his work he was an investigative judge at the Reichsgericht and at the Bavarian Supreme Court . From August 1, 1934, he was senior public prosecutor at the Munich I regional court. In mid-May 1938, he was promoted to the Munich II regional court director and seconded to the Reichsgericht as an assistant judge. On May 1, 1939, Schäfer was appointed Reich judge.

After the occupation of Leipzig by the Red Army , he was arrested by the NKVD . After staying in the special camps in Mühlberg and Buchenwald , he was released on January 16, 1950.

First he was president of the district court in Hof. In 1950, Schäfer succeeded Hermann Weinkauff as President of the Bamberg Higher Regional Court . He held office until 1956. In 1951 he was elected as a member of the Bavarian Constitutional Court.
