August Schmidt (born September 9, 1808 in Vienna ; † October 13, 1891 ibid) was an Austrian music writer, journalist , club organizer and musician .

Life

education and profession

August Schmidt, son of the musician and civil servant Adam August Schmidt (1777–1847), passed his matriculation examination at the Viennese Piarist High School in 1824 . Schmidt, who had received violin lessons from his father at the age of five, was subsequently trained as a singer by Johann Baptist Henneberg and Ludwig Schwarzböck . In 1828 he began his military service, in 1834 he was transferred to the state debt fund in the position of cashier. After he was promoted to controller there , he was adopted into retirement in 1870.

Act

The active musician and composer of songs , waltzes and concert pieces for violin stood out in particular as a music writer, journalist and club organizer. August Schmidt played a leading role in founding the Philharmonic Concerts (1842), the Vienna Men's Singing Association (1843) and the mixed choir association Wiener Singakademie (1858). Schmidt, who had published poems , stories and travelogues in newspapers and magazines since 1836 , founded the Allgemeine Wiener Musikzeitung in 1841, which was influential on the development of Viennese musical life and was its publisher and editor until 1847. He then worked from 1852 to 1854 as a correspondent for the Süddeutsche Musik-Zeitung and from 1856 to 1872 as the Wanderer 's music advisor.

August Schmidt published, among other things, his music-biographical compilation Denksteine , 1860 History of the Vienna Male Choir Association and 1890 Monograph of the Madrigal .

His grave is in the Vienna Central Cemetery (Group 33A, Row 1, Number 11).

Honors

The philosophy faculty of the University of Jena awarded August Schmidt an honorary doctorate (Dr. phil. Hc) in 1839 in recognition of his services . On February 24, 1840, the Jena University also awarded Robert Schumann this title.
