August Schoop

August Schoop (born February 25, 1858 in Hönningen ; † November 16, 1932 in Düren ; full name Heinrich August Martin Schoop ) was a German educator , historian , chronicler , archivist , archaeologist and collection manager. His parents were Augustin Schoop (1806-1858) and his wife Christine geb. Theisen.

The Dürener Volkszeitung announced on March 7, 1891 that Schoop was coming to the Stiftisches Gymnasium Düren as an assistant teacher . In 1896 he became a senior teacher and in 1906 a professor at this grammar school. There he taught German, languages, geography, history and sports as a professor until April 1, 1923.

From 1902 to 1926 Schoop was chairman of the Düren history association . He also worked from 1894 to 1927 as an archivist for the city of Düren. He wrote numerous publications on the history of Düren and founded the archaeological department of the Leopold Hoesch Museum .

Schoop attended the Progymnasium in Linz on the Rhine . He passed the Abitur at the Marzelle High School in Cologne . He studied history and philosophy at the University of Münster . After three semesters he moved to Berlin. Schoop received his doctorate in 1883 with the thesis Constitutional History of Trier, from the oldest immunities up to the year 1260 . The work was approved by the Philosophical Faculty of the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin .

After a brief activity as an assistant at the art history seminar at the University of Berlin, Schoop passed his state examination in philosophy . He passed the academic examination for teaching at secondary schools on November 25, 1844 in Berlin . He began his preparatory service on April 1, 1885 at the Realgymnasium in Cologne . From 1888 to 1889 he worked at the Progymnasium in Linz and then until 1891 in Eschweiler , then at the Stiftisches Gymnasium in Düren.

In 1893 Schoop married Rosa Schnitzler. From this marriage there were four children.

The mayor of Düren, Hubert Jakob Werners , made Schoop a part-time archivist for the city of Düren in 1894. He arranged the archive, which was housed in an outbuilding of the town hall on Weierstrasse . He developed it into one of the most important archives in the Rhineland .

On October 12, 1961, a street in Düren was named after him.
