August Ternes (born March 30, 1872 in Düsseldorf ; † 1938 there ) was a German portrait , genre , animal and still life painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Ternes studied painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1892 . There were Heinrich Lauenstein , Hugo Crola , Adolf Schill , Peter Janssen the Elder , Eduard von Gebhardt and Arthur fight his teachers. In 1894/1895 he applied in vain for a painting grant from the Aders Tönnies Foundation . Ternes distinguished himself especially as an animal painter. Here he often created large-format hunting motifs. However, he also painted Christian figure representations ( altarpieces ), portraits and still lifes.
