The Batai virus (BATV, also known as the Čalovo virus or Chittoor virus from where it occurred ) is a virus from the genus Orthobunyavirus . According to the NCBI, it is the only virus in the species officially named Batai orthobunyavirus .

It can affect various birds and mammals including humans . The main route of infection is transmission through mosquitoes (in Europe mainly the genera Culex , Anopheles and Ochlerotatus ).

In humans, the virus sometimes causes an influenza- like clinical picture with fever ; however, the infection can also be largely symptom-free. Human diseases are relatively rare in Europe. In addition to Europe, the virus is mainly found in southern and eastern Asia.

In domestic cattle in the administrative district of Karlsruhe (Germany) was an antibody - prevalence of detected less than 1% of the tested animals. A study in Italy found a prevalence of 7%.
