August Zarnack

Joachim August Christian Zarnack (born September 21, 1777 in Mehmke ; † June 11, 1827 in Potsdam ) was a German preacher , educator and folk song collector .

life and work

After studying theology in Halle (Saale) , Zarnack became a preacher and teacher at the secondary school for girls in Beeskow . In 1815 Zarnack was appointed director of education of the “ Great Orphanage in Potsdam ” (formerly “Royal Potsdam's Great Military Orphanage and its Girls' House at Pretzsch Castle ”). In 1822 he was involved in a scandal and temporarily suspended.

In 1819/20 Zarnack wrote the tragic love song O Tannenbaum based on the Silesian folk song Ach Tannenbaum from the 16th century , the first stanza of which was adopted by Ernst Anschütz in 1824 in the Christmas song O Tannenbaum .
