I dreamed this night

I dreamed the night at Erk / Böhme 1894

I dreamed the night is a German folk song .

The melody was known before 1775. Friedrich Nicolai printed it in 1777 in the Feynen kleynen Almanach with the text A hunter wants to hunt as a folk tune . The songs The leaves fall from the trees (text: Siegfried August Mahlmann 1805), Beautiful children love and Zu Koblenz auf der Brücken were sung to her.

According to August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben , the text is probably by August Zarnack , who published the song under the title The Heavy Dream in the second volume of his collection of German folk songs for elementary schools , Berlin 1820.

Rosemary is used in this text as a symbol of death : in northern Germany rosemary was used as grave planting, and in some places mourners wore rosemary stalks at funerals.

text

I dreamed that night,
probably a heavy dream, a rosemary tree
grew in my garden
.

The garden was
a churchyard, the grave was a flowerbed,
and the
crown and blossom fell from the green tree .

I would collect the blossoms
in a golden jug,
which fell from my hands so
that it broke into pieces.

From there I saw pearls trickling down
and droplets of rose-red:
What may the dream mean?
Oh love, are you dead?
