August von Heyden

August Jakob Theodor von Heyden-Nerfken (born June 13, 1827 in Breslau , † June 1, 1897 in Berlin ) was a German painter and poet and a Prussian State Councilor .

August von Heyden was born into the East Prussian noble family Heyden-Nerfken . His parents were the writer and senior government councilor Friedrich von Heyden (born September 3, 1789, † November 5, 1851) and his wife Friederike von Hippel (1807-1865). His younger brother was the chemist Jacob Friedrich von Heyden (1838–1926).

Life

shouldn't learn a breadless art at the request of his family. Therefore, after studying mining in Wroclaw and Berlin, he initially chose the career path of miner. In 1859, the artistically ambitious autodidact released himself from the material cover of his profession as general representative and manager of the mines of Prince Hugo zu Hohenlohe-Öhringen on Ujest and went to the art academy in Berlin . With his art studies he made his lifelong dream come true. Between 1861 and 1863 Heyden lived and worked in Paris . During this time he was awarded the gold medal of the Paris Academy of Art for the portrayal of the patron saint of miners, Saint Barbara , in the Catholic parish church of St. Marien in Dudweiler .

August von Heyden was a member of the management of the Märkisches Provinzial-Museum Berlin, founded in 1874 . In 1882 he received a professorship at the Berlin Art Academy and had been a member of the Prussian State Council since 1890. In 1893 Heyden ended his teaching activity in Berlin.

Heyden often chose mining themes in his poems. His caricatures, in which he portrayed his friend Theodor Fontane , are also known. He also designed the curtain of the opera in Berlin and the painting of the great hall in the courthouse in Poznan .

Heyden married Josephine Wilhelmine Justine von Weigel on September 25, 1854 in Breslau (* June 16, 1834, † March 11, 1901). The couple had several children:
