August von Rentzell

Wilhelm August von Rentzell (* August 1809 in Marienwerder , Niederbarnim district ; † December 22, 1891 in Berlin ) was a German genre and animal painter .

Life

After a short career as an officer, von Rentzell studied with Carl Joseph Begas at the Berlin Art Academy . In 1832 he entered the studio of Karl Wilhelm Wach . At the end of the 1830s he worked for Franz Krüger . Then he moved to Düsseldorf for some time . Finally he returned to Berlin.

As a representative of the humorous genre, he created street and landscape scenes as well as interiors. He often painted animals, especially horses, cattle and dogs. Since von Rentzell liked to depict human misfortunes and entanglements, the art historian Adolf Rosenberg characterized him as a "painter of chaos, motley and confusion".
