family

August zu Stolberg came from the direct imperial line of the counts Stolberg-Roßla of the noble family Stolberg . He was the son of Count Johann Martin zu Stolberg-Roßla (1728–1795) and his wife Sophie Charlotte, née Burggräfin zu Kirchberg and Countess zu Sayn-Hachenburg (1731–1772). He married on October 22, 1811 in Schönberg Caroline Auguste Luise Henriette Amalie Countess to Erbach-Schönberg (1785-1848), the daughter of Karl Graf zu Erbach-Schönberg (1732-1816) and his wife Maria Nepomukena Josepha Viktoria Anna née Zadubsky von Schonthal (1757–1787). His son Karl zu Stolberg-Roßla inherited the class rule.

Life

After the early death of his wife, Count Johann Martin zu Stolberg-Roßla went to his brother-in-law, Count Friedrich Alexander von Wied . His wife was the sister of the deceased countess and now took over the upbringing of the children. August received lessons in the house of Count Carl zu Wied and studied law and camera sciences at the University of Marburg and the University of Leipzig with his brothers from 1787 to 1790 . In 1810 the (unmarried) ruling Count Heinrich Christian Friedrich von Stolberg-Roßla died and he took over the rule of Ortenberg . He suffered from cataracts but managed the country with the help of his brother. Education was particularly important to him, and so he never missed any exam. In 1824 he was almost completely blind and so he decided to have an operation. He turned to the Giessen doctor Wilhelm Balser . After the first operation, the eye became infected, so a second and third was necessary. But then he could see something again. In 1826, after the death of Wilhelm zu Stolberg-Roßla , he inherited the county of Stolberg-Roßla. At the same time he moved his residence to Roßla Castle , where he had the east wing added in the classical style.

As a registrar he was a hereditary member of the Saxon provincial parliament in Prussia since the fall of the county of Stolberg-Roßla in 1826 . Because of the reign of Ortenberg he was in the Grand Duchy of Hesse as a registrar from 1820 to 1846, a member of the First Chamber of the Estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse . On June 29, 1820 he took his deputy oath. Only in the years 1821 to 1824 did he take part in the deliberations of the chamber.

On March 28, 1826, he concluded a state treaty with Prussia, which provided for an alignment of the judicial and administrative authorities. He also succeeded in doing this.
