Karl Eugen Graf zu Erbach-Schönberg (also Carl ) (born February 10, 1732 in Schönberg Palace near Bensheim ; † July 29, 1816 Schönberg Palace) was an officer in the Austrian service.

Erbach-Schönberg was born as the fifth child of Count Georg August zu Erbach-Schönberg and Ferdinanda Henriette zu Stolberg-Gedern at Schönberg Castle.

Life

He entered Austrian service early on and took part in the last fighting of the War of the Austrian Succession (1740–1748) as a 16-year-old ensign of the Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel regiment . He fought, already as an officer, in the Seven Years' War (1756–1763). As a major , he brought the news of the successful attack on Berlin to Vienna. On September 29, 1762 he succeeded in taking the entrenchments at Spechthausen . For this act he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Military Maria Theresa Order . In 1773 he was made a colonel and took over the Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel regiment himself.

In 1769 he rose to lieutenant colonel and in 1773 to colonel of the 10th Infantry Regiment. in 1783 he became a major general and during the Russo-Austrian Turkish War he was made a field marshal lieutenant.

In the first coalition war in 1792 he commanded a corps of 11,200 men and 1,200 riders on the Rhine. At that time the French General Adam-Philippe de Custine was standing opposite. During the siege of Valenciennes (July 25th to 26th, 1793) he led one of the three columns that undertook the successful assault on the fortress. He later distinguished himself at the siege of le Quesnoy (August 1793) and at Menin (September 15), where he led the vanguard of the Duke of York. He also fought in 1794 and 1795, and had his last command over Mainz fortress . He left the Austrian army in 1796 with the title of General Feldzeugmeister. In 1799 he succeeded his older brother Christian in the county government.

Karl Eugen zu Erbach-Schönberg died at the age of 85 on July 29, 1816 at Schönberg Castle.

Erbach-Schönberg married the Bohemian noblewoman Maria Johanna Zadubsky von Schönthal (1757–1787) on July 1, 1783 . The couple had two daughters during their brief marriage:

Maria Johanna Zadubsky von Schönthal died just over three weeks after the birth of the second daughter. Erbach-Schönberg no longer married.

Erbach Regiment

In 1793 Erbach-Schönberg became the owner of the 42nd Infantry Regiment. This regiment later fought so bravely in the Battle of Wagram in the Fifth Coalition War against Napoleon Bonaparte with its own heavy losses that it was given priority on the battlefield by Archduke Karl of Austria to move into the Hofburg in Vienna for the “General Grenadier March” . The infantry regiment No. 42 was also given the honorary name "Regiment Erbach" after the last owner. It was the third of the name "Regiment Erbach", also called "Erbach-Schönberg" or "Erbach-Eger" after the later garrison town . In 1817 the "March of the Austrian Infantry Regiment 42 Erbach Eger" was created as a separate regimental march.
