During the siege of Valenciennes (July 25th to 26th, 1793) he led one of the three columns that undertook the successful assault on the fortress. He later distinguished himself at the siege of le Quesnoy (August 1793) and at Menin (September 15), where he led the vanguard of the Duke of York. He also fought in 1794 and 1795, and had his last command over Mainz fortress . He left the Austrian army in 1796 with the title of General Feldzeugmeister. In 1799 he succeeded his older brother Christian in the county government.
Karl Eugen zu Erbach-Schönberg died at the age of 85 on July 29, 1816 at Schönberg Castle.
family
Erbach-Schönberg married the Bohemian noblewoman Maria Johanna Zadubsky von Schönthal (1757–1787) on July 1, 1783 . The couple had two daughters during their brief marriage:
- Karoline (1785–1848) ⚭ August 22, 1811 Count August zu Stolberg-Roßla
- Maria Anna (* 1787 - August 19, 1825) ⚭ Emil Christian zu Erbach-Schönberg (* December 2, 1789 - May 26, 1828),
Maria Johanna Zadubsky von Schönthal died just over three weeks after the birth of the second daughter. Erbach-Schönberg no longer married.
Erbach Regiment
In 1793 Erbach-Schönberg became the owner of the 42nd Infantry Regiment. This regiment later fought so bravely in the Battle of Wagram in the Fifth Coalition War against Napoleon Bonaparte with its own heavy losses that it was given priority on the battlefield by Archduke Karl of Austria to move into the Hofburg in Vienna for the “General Grenadier March” . The infantry regiment No. 42 was also given the honorary name "Regiment Erbach" after the last owner. It was the third of the name "Regiment Erbach", also called "Erbach-Schönberg" or "Erbach-Eger" after the later garrison town . In 1817 the "March of the Austrian Infantry Regiment 42 Erbach Eger" was created as a separate regimental march.
