Georg Friedrich Wilhelm Balser (born April 1, 1780 in Darmstadt , † January 5, 1846 in Gießen ) was a German medic .

Life

Balser studied medicine in Gießen, Jena and Vienna from 1797. In Vienna he was trained in ophthalmology with Georg Joseph Beer and Schmid. In 1801 he received his doctorate from the University of Giessen . After working as a general practitioner in Darmstadt, he became a full professor in Gießen in 1804. Balser was later appointed to the Grand Ducal Hessian Secret Medical Councilor. Balser was accepted into the Regensburg Freemason Lodge Carl to the three keys in 1802 .

In the first two electoral terms (1820-1824) Wilhelm Balser was a member of the second chamber of the state estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse . In the state estates he represented the constituency of the city of Gießen .

Wilhelm Balser was the son of Hofmedicus, Hofrat and Landphysicus Theodor Friedrich Ludwig Balser (1732-1804) and his wife Maria Juliane nee Wissmann. His brother Friedrich August Balser (1771-1836) was senior war councilor in Darmstadt. Wilhelm Balser married Sophie Dorothee Juliane, born in Gießen, on March 22, 1804 (born April 24, 1784 in Darmstadt; † August 28, 1831 in Gießen). Wilhelm Balser was the grandfather of the ophthalmologist Wilhelm Hess (1831–1905) and great-grandfather of the ophthalmologist Carl von Hess (1863–1923).

In his memory, Emilie Wilhelmine Countess von Görlitz donated the Balseric Foundation in Gießen. Balser was appointed to the Secret Medical Council on July 9, 1830 , and in June 1832, Director of the Academic Clinic on Seltersberg, was awarded the Commander's Cross, 2nd class, of the Ludewig Order .
