Auguste Cammissar

Auguste Cammissar (* as August Cammisar July 10, 1873 in Strasbourg , German Empire ; † December 27, 1962 in Strasbourg, France ) was an Alsatian painter .

Live and act

Auguste Cammissar created glass paintings , watercolors , gouaches and oil paintings . He preferred to paint still lifes , flowers and landscapes, especially in Alsace . He loved to portray his family, father, wife, and daughter . But his favorite subject was the landscape.

He began his career as a glass painter after attending the arts and crafts schools in Karlsruhe and Strasbourg. He became known for the stained glass windows he created with Paul Braunagel and received several awards. He also studied in Munich and Vienna and lived temporarily in Tübingen . In 1894 he became assistant director of l'Ecole des Arts décoratifs in Strasbourg, where he taught as a professor. One of his students was Luc Hueber , a well-known artist from the Groupe de Mai .

From the beginning, Cammissar was one of the most important representatives of a group of artists from Saint-Léonard . He participated in the meetings Dîner of 13 of Anselm Laugel and Kunschthaafe of Auguste Michel . He was a member of the association of independent artists in Alsace, AIDA, founded at the beginning of the 20th century. He died in a car accident at the age of 89 and was buried in Temple Neuf on December 31, 1962 .

family

He was a son of the glass blower and master carpenter August Cammisar (born September 11, 1847 in Rheinzabern ; † May 8, 1910 in Strasbourg ) and his wife Marie, née. Markert, from Kehl . His siblings were Karl Cammisar (1876–1942), Marie Barbe Cammisar (* 1881) and the painter Rudolf Cammisar (1891–1983). He married Cécile Walther on April 1, 1909. With her he had a daughter and two grandchildren, Sylvette and Jacques Henry. He chose the name spelling with the double S differently from the family.
