Auguste de Pourtalès

Auguste Frédéric de Pourtalès (born February 20, 1840 in Neuchâtel , Canton Neuchâtel ; † October 3, 1918 in Mauensee , Canton Lucerne ) was a Swiss landscape painter and art collector .

Life

Pourtalès, offspring of the noble Huguenot family Pourtalès , was one of nine children of the Prussian major and count Alexandre-Joseph de Pourtalès (1810-1883) and his wife Augusta Marie Elisabeth Saladin de Crans (1815-1885). One of his brothers was the sailor Hermann de Pourtalès .

Auguste de Pourtalès studied painting with François Diday in Geneva , with Oswald Achenbach in Düsseldorf , where his nephew Horace de Saussure later trained as a painter, and with Charles Gleyre in Paris . On September 26, 1866, he married Marguerite Célestine Renouard de Bussière (1840-1926). The couple had two children, including the sailor Bernard de Pourtalès .

In addition to landscape painting, Pourtalès also collected art. He was the owner of Mauensee Castle . He donated his collection to the Musée d'histoire of the city of Neuchâtel. He is also considered a benefactor of the Fondation de l'Hôpital Pourtalès .
