Horace de Saussure

Horace de Saussure (born May 15, 1859 in Geneva ; † September 18, 1926 there ) was a Swiss landscape and portrait painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

De Saussure, great-grandson of the naturalist Horace-Bénédict de Saussure , son of the mineralogist and entomologist Henri de Saussure , younger brother of the linguist Ferdinand de Saussure and nephew of the landscape painter Auguste de Pourtalès , received artistic training in Munich and Düsseldorf . In the years 1878 to 1886 he attended the Düsseldorf Art Academy . The painters Hugo Crola , Heinrich Lauenstein , Peter Janssen the Elder were there. Ä. and Wilhelm Sohn his teachers. Under the direction of son, de Saussure led together withPeter von Krafft painted the ceiling of the auditorium for the Düsseldorf City Theater . He worked in Florence and Paris as well as in Munich before settling down as a painter in his hometown. In 1891 he went on a trip to the United States .
