Augustin-Marie Joly (born July 22, 1917 in Grenoble , † January 16, 2006 in Flavigny-sur-Ozerain ) was a French late-calling Roman Catholic clergyman, Benedictine , abbot and founder of a monastery.

life and work

Officer and family man

Maurice Joly lost his mother at the age of 18 months and grew up in a foster family in Saint-Ismier . From 1927 he attended high school in Grenoble, from 1936 the military school Saint-Cyr in Saint-Cyr-l'École . Captured as a prisoner of war in 1940, he fled from Saint-Quentin to his homeland and joined the gendarmerie. He experienced the end of the war as city commander of Grenoble. In 1952 his wife died, with whom he had seven children.

Ignatian influenced Benedictine

He turned to the parish staff of Christ the King , founded by Francisco de Paula Vallet y Arnau in Chabeuil , who practiced the Ignatian retreat . At the age of 48, he entered the Benedictine Abbey of Maylis in 1965 , took on the religious name Augustin-Marie and was ordained a priest that same year.

Monastery founder

In 1972 he left the monastery and founded the independent monastery of Saint-Joseph de Clairval in Martigny , Switzerland (to combine the Rule of Benedict with the retreat) . Since the owner there needed the building for himself, the community moved to Flavigny-sur-Ozerain in the Côte-d'Or department in 1976 , where they still live today.

Dept

From 1982 Joly tried to get his monastery recognized by Bishop Jean Balland of Dijon , which he achieved in 1988 after separating from Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre in 1984 . The monastery was elevated to an abbey in 1992 and Joly was ordained abbot. At the end of 1993 he stepped down for reasons of age and temporarily retired to the Rosans Benedictine convent . He died in Flavigny at the age of 88. Archbishop Roland Minnerath presided over the funeral ceremonies. The abbot's successor was Antoine Marie Beauchef (* 1943) until 2019.
