Aurel Mertz

Aurel Mertz (born June 1, 1989 in Stuttgart ) is a German comedian and presenter .

Life

Mertz was born and raised in Stuttgart. From 2009 to 2012 he studied journalism and communication studies in Vienna and Istanbul. Mertz was discovered by Frank Elstner in 2013 and promoted in the Frank Elstner Masterclass moderator school initiated by the Axel Springer Academy . Mertz lives in Berlin .

During his training in the Frank Elstner Masterclass , Mertz developed the late night show Boomarama , which was initially shown on the web channel zuio.tv and between 2015 and 2017 on Tele 5 . Mertz is a recurring guest on the live stream channel Rocket Beans TV . He and the Rocket Beans moderators Florentin Will and Lars Paulsen got to know each other in the Frank Elstner Masterclass . Aurel had his first appearance on Rocket Beans TV in June 2015 on the Rocket Beans show "Bohn Jour" together with Florentin Will. Appearances on the programs Almost Daily , Almost Plaily and MoinMoin followed .

Aurel has been a stand-up comedian since 2017. Among other things, he was seen live at Nightwash in the laundromat in Cologne. In March 2020 he went on tour for the first time with his own comedy program Millennials . In August 2019, Mertz was a guest on Jan Böhmermann's show Neo Magazin Royale .

Since August 2019 he is part of the Instagram - sitcom Aurel on a specially to create channel. The sitcom consists of web episodes, images, GIFs and image graphics that are published daily in the form of Instagram posts. Aurel is produced by Steinberger Silberstein GmbH on behalf of ZDF for funk , the ZDF youth program.

In July 2020, Mertz published a satirical video on his Instagram channel about police violence in the context of the Black Lives Matter movement. In it he plays a young man who is about to unlock his bike. Two police officers speculate whether he is about to commit a crime and discuss his skin color . At the end of the video, a sniper shoots him . When the two police officers see that the man is wearing sandals with socks, they come to the conclusion that he is German. After reporting by Bild , various politicians criticized the video. North Rhine-Westphalia's interior minister Herbert Reul called it a “slap in the face of every police officer”, and the portrayal of police officers “across the board as xenophobic dull cheeks” was inhuman. Baden-Württemberg's Interior Minister Thomas Strobl and CDU interior politician Christoph de Vries also criticized the video. Mertz defended the video on Twitter on the grounds that it was “not about placing the entire police under general suspicion, but as long as we get pictures like the ones currently in Frankfurt and Düsseldorf and racial profiling studies are canceled, we have to put our fingers in to lay the wound ”.
