Autonoë

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Autonoë ( Greek  Αὐτονόη ) is in Greek mythology a daughter of King Kadmos of Thebes and Harmonia and wife of Aristaios . This made her the sister of Semele , Agaue , Ino , Polydoros and Illyrios .

Together with their sisters Ino and Agaue, blinded by Dionysus , they tore Pentheus , the son of Agaue, when they roamed the forest mountains of the Kithairon as maenads and Pentheus tried to overhear them there.

Autonoë was the mother of Aktaion , who was torn apart by his own dogs when he secretly watched the goddess Artemis and her nymphs bathing. In addition, Autonoë was the mother of Makris , the nurse of Dionysus.

The tragic fate of her family finally saddened her so much that she left Thebes and settled in Ereneia in the area of the Megarians , where her grave could still be shown at the time of Pausanias .
