Gabriel Thomaz founded the rock band Little Quail and The Mad Birds in his hometown of Brasília in 1988 and was also noticed as a songwriter, for example for Raimundos and Ultraje a Rigor . After his band broke up in 1996, he moved to Rio de Janeiro , where he founded the band Autoramas in 1997 with the drummer Nervoso and the bassist Simone do Vale, who was previously responsible for the press work of the Planet Hemp group . They borrowed the name from the name used in Brazil for slot cars , and the band has since cultivated allusions to children's toys and comics, in addition to their clear references to the pop-cultural symbolism of their influences. The name also alludes to the preference for old cars that singer Gabriel, for example, has, who owns a Puma convertible.

Nervoso left the band before their first gig in 1998. For him, the former Planet Hemp drummer Bacalhau joined the group. Curiously enough, Nervoso had replaced him in 1994 in the band Acabou La Tequlia (the famous musician Kassin ). The live performances and CD and record releases of the Autoramas received the attention of the music scene and, increasingly, the country's music press, who compared them to B52s , Devo or the Jovem Guarda and Yéyé groups. In 2001 they played at the Rock in Rio Festival a. a. with Mudhoney and the Pixies , which further increased their popularity. As a result, their publications and their appearances increased, which also took them abroad. In 2002 they played a successful tour of Japan with Guitar Wolf . Since then, the group has toured Europe several times. In 2005, the Autoramas won three awards at the MTV Music Awards in Brazil.

In 2008 Flávia joined the band as bassist, replacing Selma. In 2004 she replaced the founding bassist Simone. Flávia previously played in numerous garage bands in the Underground Rios and, alongside the Autoramas, is also the singer and guitarist of the female garage trio As Doidivinas, which she founded in 2006 .

In 2009 they played an acoustic concert for MTV Brasil with numerous guests, including the producer and well-known Barão Vermelho musician Roberto Frejat . After it was broadcast, the performance was also released on CD and DVD. In 2011 Autoramas recorded a new album that they financed with the help of their fans using the crowdfunding model.

In early 2015, Autoramas announced a new line-up. Of the founding members, only Gabriel Thomaz (vocals) remained. Melvin (bass), Fred Castro (ex-drummer at Raimundos) and Érika Martins (ex-Penélope) with guitar, percussion, keyboards and vocals were added. Former drummer Bacalhau left Autoramas for a revival of his original band Planet Hemp .
