action

The quiet routine of five Palestinian Carmelites is suddenly disrupted when the car of a Jewish settler family collides with a statue of Mary in front of their house. You ring the doorbell to ask for help. At first nobody opens because the sisters do not let themselves be disturbed in their vow of silence . When the youngest finally opens, she realizes with horror that the statue of Mary was beheaded in the accident. Angry, she describes the misfortune to the other nuns, which at first proves difficult because of the vow. The settlers ask to call for help, but according to the laws of the Sabbath they are not allowed to operate any technical devices. They try to order a taxi, but the Arabs are charged exorbitant prices because they are Jews. Finally, the oldest nun suggests repairing an old car. The youngest proves to be a well-founded mechanic. In order not to be shot by the Jews because of the Arab car, they place an oversized statue of the Virgin Mary on the roof and continue their journey.

criticism

Jennie Kermode of Eye for Film judges that the film never ridicules religious traditions, but merely "meekly" flaunts the hypocrisy associated with them. Ave Maria stands in contrast to previous films that tried to solve problems with a direct focus on the conflict and tense social circumstances. Instead, this film relies on humor and warmth.
