The Avenida is named after the Roman Catholic Bishop António Joaquim de Medeiros (1846–1897), who promoted the proselytization of Portuguese Timor in the 19th century. From 1877 he was Superior of the Church and Vicar General and from 1884 Bishop of Macau . He died in Portuguese Timor in 1897.

Road map

The Avenida forms the border between the administrative offices of Vera Cruz in the west, with the Sucos Caicoli and Mascarenhas , and Nain Feto in the east, with the Suco Santa Cruz . The southern part leads through the Balide district .

Originally, Avenida Bispo Medeiros reached as far as the Bay of Dili , but in 2015 the northern part was renamed Avenida Xavier do Amaral .

Avenida Bispo Medeiros now begins at the roundabout at the Mercado Municipal , which is now the Dili exhibition center. Avenida Liberdade de Imprensa comes from the east and Rua de Caicoli from the west . Where the Rua do Mercado Municipal branches off to the west, on the east side is the Dilis central post office , built in 2010 with Korean help, and next to it the headquarters of the military police . Opposite is the Indonesian Cultural Center ( Pusat Budaya Indonesia ). On the west side is the Universidade de Díli (UNDIL) and the Korean School (Escola Lian Korea) , where several hundred East Timorese guest workers receive language lessons for their future work in South Korea . After the junction with Avenida de Balide (west) and Rua 12 de Novembro , Avenida Bispo Medeiros crosses the Balide district, past the Church of the Conception of Mary in Balide, the Colégio de São José and the São Luís primary school (Escola Primaria Katolica Balide) . From Rua Dom José Reibeiro , Rua Lahane leads south to the district of the same name .
