The Avenida Xavier do Amaral is one of the main streets in the center of the East Timorese capital Dili . It is named after the former president and founding president of FRETILIN Francisco Xavier do Amaral , who died in 2012. Until 2015, Avenida was the northern part of Avenida Bispo Medeiros .
The Avenida forms the border between the administrative offices of Vera Cruz in the west, with the Sucos Colmera and Caicoli , and Nain Feto in the east, with the Sucos Bidau Lecidere , Gricenfor and Santa Cruz .
The Avenida begins at the southern end of the Bay of Dili , where it branches off to the south from Avenida Marginal , which follows the bank. On the west side is the park that forms the front of the East Timor government palace . Opposite is the Casa Europa , the seat of the Representation of the European Union in East Timor. After Rua 30 de Agosto , on the east side is the former building of the Associação Comercial, Agrícola e Industrial de Timor (ACAIT), with the Portuguese embassy . On the west side, behind the side wing of the government palace, the central bank of East Timor and a smaller administrative building, is the East Timor’s national parliament , which has its entrance on the crossing Rua Formosa . The crossing Avenida 20 de Maio marks the beginning of the Caicoli and Santa Cruz districts. On the Santa Cruz side is the East Timor National Stadium . The Avenida Xavier do Amaral ends in a roundabout, from where the Avenida Bispo Medeiros continues south . On the Caicoli side is the Ministry of Transport and Communications. Avenida Liberdade de Imprensa comes from the east and Rua de Caicoli from the west . The inside of the roundabout belongs to Suco Santa Cruz. The monument to Francisco Xavier do Amaral has stood here since 2017 .
