The Avon , also Aven or A'an , is a river in the Scottish Unitary Authority Moray . It flows off at the eastern end of Loch Avon , which is located in the Cairngorms at an altitude of about 720 m . The lake is located in a practically uninhabited region and is surrounded by three mountains over 1100 m high, the Ben Macdhui , the Cairn Gorm and the Beinn Mheadhoin . For the first 15 km, the Avon runs primarily in a north-easterly direction. It then turns sharply north-northwest about 15 km south of Tomintoul and maintains that direction for 16 km. It then runs a further nine kilometers in a northerly direction before turning north-east for the last nine kilometers. The Avon flows into the Spey at Ballindalloch . The Avon receives its largest tributary, the Livet , about seven kilometers from its mouth.

The A95 crosses the Avon a few kilometers from the estuary . Formerly the road crossed the river over an arched bridge called the Bridge of Avon from 1800. Today it is closed to traffic and listed as a monument in the highest Scottish monument category A. Another bridge located at Tomintoul, also called the Bridge of Avon , is listed in monument category B. In 1829 a flood destroyed the smaller of the two arches. However, it was restored. The bridge has meanwhile been replaced by a newer, south-facing structure and is closed to traffic.
