The highway "Hemus" or Awtomagistrala "Hemus" or Awtomagistrala A2 ( Bulgarian Автомагистрала А2 or Автомагистрала Хемус ) is a planned and partially completed highway in Bulgaria . The final length will be 433 km, 163 km are already in operation. In the future it will connect the capital Sofia with Varna on the Black Sea coast.
The “Hemus” motorway is named after the ancient name for the Balkan Mountains .
Sections in operation
The first part was a model project by the communist leader Todor Zhivkov , which began with Gorni Bogrow (near Sofia ) and ended in his native Pravets . The second section, Prawez - Jablaniza was officially put into operation on December 5, 1999. The route crosses the Balkan Mountains over a length of 5.47 km, with an additional 16 km being developed. Two viaducts and a tunnel were built. The entire Gorni Bogrow - Jablaniza section also contains three further tunnels. Construction of the section began as early as 1984, but was suspended until the late 1980s due to a lack of funds. It could not be completed until 1998 to 1999.
On December 30, 2005 the Bulgarian Prime Minister Sergej Stanischew opened the 12.8 km long section Kaspichan - Shumen in northeastern Bulgaria. In August 2013, the gap was closed in the first 8 kilometers from Sofia, so the motorway is passable from the Sofia ring road to Jablanitsa and from Shumen to Varna.
A public-private partnership is being discussed for the extension of the route .
