tasks

Azacca is considered the beloved younger brother of the Loa Ghede and at the same time belongs to the group of the same name, the Ghede-Loa, who are generally supposed to be active in the tension between life and death. Its specific main task is the agriculture , he is also guardian spirit of courtship to young girls and polygamy and keeper of the incest taboo and the child's welfare . Overall, he is ascribed less power than his brother; at the same time he lacks the other Ghede-Loa, often their own treachery and their anger . He is said to have been worshiped by the Taíno , the natives of Haiti.

Appearance

He appears to people as a young, barefoot, friendly and somewhat clumsy country dweller, smokes a tobacco pipe and wears a straw hat and a straw sack. Azacca is considered a hard worker, but also playful, and is supposed to moan like a goat. His relationship to city life and city dwellers is considered tense. He loves gossip and good food that he is supposed to eat greedily. He is an avid observer of interpersonal relationships and is seen as incorruptible and friendly, but also resentful and must be appeased with special reconciliation rituals by people who have sinned against him .

cult

symbolism

Azaccas Veve consists of the stylized representation of a parceled out field , surrounded by agricultural implements such as two sickles, a harvesting knife, two machetes and a carrier bag, as well as eight eight-pointed stars, one on the pocket, the others free-standing between the implements. The colors green , blue and red are assigned to it. If respect is to be shown to him, he is not addressed by his name but as a cousin (in Kreyòl : kouzen ).

Adoration

As in the case of the other loa, the worship of Azacca is mainly based on prayers and offerings , which are usually practiced together. As a sacrifice, he should prefer white rum , brown sugar , avocados , boiled corn, bread soaked in vegetable oil, goats, gray chickens, peanuts, sweet potatoes , yams , coconuts, cola, coffee, any fruit and fatty giblets in the form of fried slices. In the Christian dominated direction of Haitian Voodoo Azacca was with the Roman Catholic saint Isidore of Madrid , a 1622 canonized farmers , identified and accordingly revered.
