The first record of white colonization dates back to 1846 when a doctor named James Azle Steward took over the log cabin of a Dutchman named Rumsfeldt. Other settlers followed suit and settled along the Ash Creek, Silver Creek, and Walnut Creek rivers here . In 1881 the first post office opened and the settlement was named after the postmaster O'Bar. Shortly afterwards it was renamed Azle, in honor of the first doctor here.

The main source of income at that time was the sale of agricultural products and cotton. In the 20th century the production of dairy products was added, which were mainly sold in the markets in Fort Worth and in 1920 lived here 150 people. The Trinity River was dammed around 1930 and supplied the city with electricity in the late 1930s . As a result of this and the construction of the highway between Azle and Fort Worth, the population began to grow and rose from 800 to 2,696 inhabitants from 1940 to 1960.
