Azurduy is a town in the Chuquisaca department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia , named after the freedom fighter Juana Azurduy de Padilla .

Location in the vicinity

Azurduy is the seat of the administration of the province of the same name Azurduy and the central place of the Municipio Azurduy . The village is located at an altitude of 2490  m at the confluence of the Río La Rinconada and Río San Gerónimo in one of the side valleys of the Bolivian Cordillera Central , ten kilometers east of the Río Pilcomayo .

Azurduy is located between the Altiplano in the west and the lowlands in the east in one of the north-south side valleys of the Bolivian Cordillera Central . The climate of the region is a distinct daytime climate , in which the temperature differences between day and night fluctuate more clearly than the average values ​​between summer and winter.

The annual average temperature is 14 ° C (see Azurduy climate diagram), the monthly values ​​fluctuate between 10 ° C in June / July and 16 ° C in December / January. Annual precipitation is just under 550 mm, with a dry season and monthly values ​​below 10 mm from May to August, and maximum values ​​of 100 to 110 mm from December to February.

Transport network

Azurduy is located at a distance of 317 kilometers by road southeast of Sucre , the capital of the department.

The 976 km long national road Ruta 6 runs through Sucre , which connects the capital with the Bolivian lowlands and the metropolis of Santa Cruz there . The road from Sucre to the east is paved only for the first 67 kilometers to Tarabuco , the following 120 kilometers to Padilla are covered with unpaved gravel. Fifteen kilometers before Padilla, a dirt road branches off to the south and leads via Alcalá and Tarvita after 150 kilometers to Azurduy .
