Alcalá is a town in the Chuquisaca department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Alcalá is the central place of the Municipio Villa Alcalá in the province of Tomina . The village is located at an altitude of 2072  m in one of the side valleys on the eastern slope of the Bolivian Cordillera Central , 25 km from the rural town of Padilla .

Alcalá is located at the transition from the Altiplano bounded by the Cordillera Central to the Bolivian lowlands of the Gran Chaco , 250 km as the crow flies east of Lake Poopó .

The mean average temperature of the region is around 18 ° C, the annual precipitation is around 600 mm (see Padilla climate diagram). The region does not show a pronounced temperature profile, the monthly average temperatures fluctuate only insignificantly between almost 15 ° C in June and July and 20 ° C from November to January. The monthly precipitation is between under 10 mm from May to August and over 100 mm from December to February.

Alcalá is 177 kilometers by road east of Sucre , the capital of the department.

The village is located on the 976 km long national road Ruta 6 , which connects Sucre with the Bolivian lowlands and the local metropolis of Santa Cruz .

The Ruta 6 from Sucre to Padilla is paved only for the first 67 kilometers to Tarabuco , the following 120 kilometers to Padilla have an unpaved gravel surface. Fifteen kilometers before Padilla, a dirt road branches off to the south and after ten kilometers you reach Alcalá .

Some municipalities in the Tomina province have a very high proportion of Quechua people; in the municipality of Villa Alcalá, 34.7 percent of the population speak Quechua .
