Böttcherstrasse (Stralsund)

The Böttcherstrasse in the urban area Old Town in Stralsund connects the Mönchstraße approximately at the level of the branch to the road Bielkenhagen with Jacobiturmstraße at the St. Jacob's Church . The Ossenreyerstraße and filter road cross the Böttcherstraße, the core area of the UNESCO World Heritage Historic Centers of Stralsund and Wismar belongs.

The street was initially called Papenstrasse . Since this was also the name of the parallel section between Filterstrasse and Jacobiturmstrasse (see Papenstrasse ), the two streets were divided into Kleine and Große Papenstrasse. The name Böttcherstraße has been documented since 1309, but the street retained two names until the beginning of the 16th century, when the name Böttcherstraße became established. The coopers made the barrels that were so important for the Hanseatic city's trade ; the professional title is proven in Stralsund well into the 19th century.

Some of the buildings are in the street or stood under monument protection (see list of monuments in Stralsund ), and the houses Böttcherstraße 2 , Böttcherstrasse 3 , Böttcherstraße 4 , Böttcherstraße 6 , Böttcherstrasse 10 , Böttcherstrasse 23 , Böttcherstrasse 26 , Böttcherstrasse 29 , Böttcherstrasse 30 , Böttcherstraße 34 and Böttcherstraße 35 .

Many of the buildings on Böttcherstrasse fell into disrepair during the German Democratic Republic (GDR) and were demolished during the GDR era or later; some of the vacant lots were closed with new buildings. In the house at Böttcherstraße 29, which was demolished in 1999, the local branch of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) was founded in 1891 . A branch of the cultural history museum is located in the building at Böttcherstraße 30 .
