geography

View of Bötzow

With 20 other communities, Bötzow forms a ring of villages around the Krämer . The Krämer is an approx. 60 km² forest area that covers the south-western part of the Glien countryside. "Glien" comes from Slavic and means loam or clay, which is a very apt description of the soil conditions in this area. Bötzow is located on the southeast edge of the Gliens and the Krämers. The difference in altitude in the municipality comes from this hillside location. The higher parts are on the edge of the Ländchen Glien. The lowest parts are the meadows that still belong to the Havelländisches Luch .

The Krämer Forest or Krämer Forest is also the center and namesake of the regional park of the same name .

history

The village "Cotzebant" was first mentioned in a document in 1355. The village bore this name until 1694. When the Elector Friedrich III. bought the village from Heinrich Wilhelm von der Gröben, he renamed it Bötzow. Today's Oranienburg was called Bötzow until it was renamed in 1653.

From 1650 onwards, Cotzebant / Bötzow was the main post office for the state of Glien on the Poststrasse Berlin - Hamburg.

With the arrival of large-scale industry in Hennigsdorf and the associated need for workers and their accommodation, a settlement Neu-Bötzow was founded in 1926. This emerged on the worst soils of the Bötzower estate, which was dissolved in 1919. In 1936 Bötzow and Neu-Bötzow were merged to Bötzow.

The Osthavelländische Kreisbahnen AG built, among other things, the small railroad Velten – Bötzow – Nauen in 1903/04 and the Bötzow – Spandau line in 1908/09. In the post-war years, traffic on the Bötzow – Spandau line continued to decline. In 1953, this route was discontinued in order to build the Berlin outer ring , which now runs near Bötzow. On the Velten – Bötzow – Nauen line, passenger traffic was discontinued in 1963 and freight traffic in 1964.

With the rail connection in 1905, a waste recycling facility started in Bötzow West. There, the household waste from Berlin was transported by train and sorted by hand. All recyclable materials such as glass, metals and fabric were sorted out and the compostable remnants were spread out on marshy meadows between Bötzow and Wansdorf. When the unloading possibilities were exhausted in 1917, the company was closed.

In 1920 the building of the former waste recycling was taken over by the company "OEMETA Chemische Werke GmbH". Drilling and cutting oils were produced there. The production of grinding wheels began in the late 1920s. In 1952, the “ VEB Schleifscheibefabrik Bötzow” plant became today's “Bötzower Schleifwerkzeuge GmbH”.

From 1941 to 1945 a wind power test field was operated on the Mathiasberg by the engineer Hermann Honnef . For the first time in Germany, large-scale tests for the use of wind energy were carried out here. Five systems with outputs between 500 W and 15 kW were tested.

On December 31, 2001, Bötzow was incorporated into the large community of Oberkrämer .

coat of arms

Blazon: From silver to blue, divided obliquely to the left in a wavy cut. Above a green chestnut leaf, below a flying silver swan.
Since no coat of arms was known for the municipality of Bötzow from earlier times, a new coat of arms was created in 1994. The division of the coat of arms and the coloring in blue should represent the abundance of water. Since swans can also be found on these bodies of water, this is included as a heraldic animal. The chestnut leaf symbolizes the planting of these old trees in the village meadow.

Culture and sights

Bötzower Nikolaikirche

The Bötzower Nikolaikirche is a late Gothic field stone building from the 15th century. It is located on the pilgrimage route from Berlin to Wilsnack , which was already taken in the Middle Ages and is part of a Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela . The consecration bell, the largest of the four bells, bears the year 1418. Since the church was consecrated to St. Nicolaus , the oldest church saint of the march, it is assumed that this is the conversion of an even older church. During a renovation in 1704, the dedication of the church was found when the altar was moved. In 1743 Joachim Wagner built the beautiful organ . The wooden tower top is from 1757. This year also adorns the weather vane on the top. During a repair in 1931 two Gothic frescoes were exposed and restored.

Märkisches Dielenhaus

One of Bötzow's oldest buildings is in Dorfaue 46. It is a typical Märkisches Mittelflurhaus or Märkisches Dielenhaus.

Prussian post milestone in the Krämer forest

From Bötzow, the former Hamburger Poststraße leads as a hiking and cycling path through the Krämer Forest . In order to develop this for “gentle” tourism, the “Friends of the Regional Park Krämer Forst” was founded.

There is a large clearing in the middle of the Krämer . This is where the Ziegenkrug stood, a typical post and inn that was demolished in the 1960s. Not far from here is a Prussian post milestone and a replica of a historical signpost.
